What’s the weirdest festival to experience in the US? I want something truly bizarre—not just another corn dog fair.

Easy—The National Hollerin’ Contest in Spivey’s Corner, North Carolina. Where grown adults compete to see who can yell the loudest, in a style somewhere between a foghorn and a yodeling goat. Blaze pro-tip: Bring earplugs, a sense of humor, and maybe a chicken suit if you want to blend in. It’s the kind of event where you’re nobody until you’ve hollered your heart out.

Other runners-up: The Testicle Festival (Montana), Roadkill Cook-off (Alabama), and the Underwater Music Festival (Florida Keys). Yes, underwater. No, the sound quality isn’t better, but the mermaids are real. Sort of.
