North Cascades National Park: Rugged, Wild, and Unforgettable

Last summer, I tackled the North Cascades—and now nothing else looks quite as wild. This park is where “remote” means you might see more bears than people, and your phone’s last signal was probably hours ago. The mountains rise like shark fins, glaciers cling to valleys, and the lakes are blue enough to make you question reality.

Highlights from my trip:
- Hiked Maple Pass Loop—epic wildflowers, mountain goats, and a wind that nearly stole my hat.
- Spent a night in Stehekin (you can only get there by boat, foot, or seaplane!). Best bakery in the state and pie that’ll make you want to stay forever.
- Ross Lake—kayaked past waterfalls, camped under a million stars, and heard nothing but loons.

Tips:
- Fill your gas tank before you leave civilization.
- Bring rain gear and a sense of adventure.
- Don’t forget your camera—every view looks like a postcard.

I grew up in Seattle and still think the North Cascades are the best part of the state. Did you try Diablo Lake overlook? Unreal color. Pro tip: If you’re driving Hwy 20 in late spring, watch out for mountain bikers AND deer—almost hit both in the same trip!

Stehekin’s bakery is legendary! I hiked in once and ate a cinnamon roll the size of a tire. If you’re into waterfalls, Rainbow Falls is a must, and if you’re lucky, you’ll spot a black bear or two (from a safe distance).

The North Cascades are my go-to for escaping crowds. Last fall, I camped at Colonial Creek—woke up to fog rolling over the water, totally silent. Trail tip: Thunder Knob Trail is short but the views are insane. And yes, it rained the whole time. Would do it again!
