Flint Hills, Kansas: Big Sky, Bigger Grass

Post by GatorGuide »

You think Kansas is flat until you drive into the Flint Hills—then, boom: ocean of grass, wildflowers, and zero cell service.

Took the scenic byway and got lost (on purpose). Saw bison and a tornado-shaped cloud. The Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve is a real “stop-and-stare” zone.

Where’s your favorite prairie hike or spot for watching a killer sunset?

Strong City overlook at dusk is wild. I brought snacks, got ambushed by grasshoppers. Worth it.

Met a herd of prairie dogs and one very suspicious-looking hawk. Ended the day at a BBQ joint in Cottonwood Falls that changed my life.

Anyone else get sunburned on both sides somehow?

If you haven’t gotten caught in a surprise prairie storm, have you even been to the Flint Hills?

Cimarron National Grassland has weirdly good birdwatching. Pro tip: get pie from the gas station in Matfield Green.
