So here’s my *Madison, Wisconsin* story and why I keep telling folks this is the Midwest’s best lakeside city (and yes, I’ve been to Minneapolis, don’t at me).
Arrived in Madison just as a thunderstorm rolled in—figures. But even with wet socks, this place is gorgeous. State Street has more coffee shops than parking spots and I swear half the population rides bikes, no matter the weather.
First thing I did was hit up Memorial Union Terrace (yup, that’s the one with the famous colorful chairs). Watched the sunset over Lake Mendota with a Spotted Cow in hand and a basket of cheese curds—fried, naturally, because it’s Wisconsin.
If you want a “real” Madison experience, go in September for Brat Fest. It’s just sausages everywhere and everyone’s your new best friend, unless you say “bubbler” instead of “water fountain.”
Random tip: The Capitol farmers market is insane—best apple cider donuts I ever had, and I got hustled by a grandma selling pickles.
Biked all the way to Olbrich Gardens, got rained on *again*, but at least I got to see someone propose in front of a giant blooming lily. Also, every bar claims to have the “best old fashioned” but The Old Fashioned downtown legit wins.
Anyone else think Madison is underrated for college town eats? I had the best vegan banh mi of my life, and I’m not even vegan.
Shoutout if you know a better lakeside spot in the Midwest, but Madison’s my #1 now. Anyone catch a Badgers game? Does rain ever stop here, or nah?

Those squeeky cheese curds are the real deal. Try Mickie’s Dairy Bar for breakfast. Portions are huge—couldn’t finish mine, but I tried hard lol.

I lived there 4 years. Ian’s Pizza at 2am is how you survive. Also, Tornado Room for steak, just don’t show up in flipflops or you’ll get The Look. Rain? That’s called “spring” in Madison.

Caught a Badgers football game once. Loudest stadium I’ve ever been in. Plus, the whole city just shuts down for game day. Go red!

It rained 4 days out of 5 when I visited. Can confirm, my umbrella died. Beautiful lake tho, just wish my socks ever dried out.

Spent my 30th birthday in Madison, WI. Kayaked Lake Monona, ate three kinds of bratwurst, and hit three breweries in one day. Ale Asylum and Karben4 are musts if you like beer.
Rain started, everyone just moved inside and kept the party going. That’s how you know it’s a Wisconsin summer. I’d go back for the lakes and the cheese curds alone.
P.S. Anyone know if the Terrace ever dries out? I slipped on wet concrete twice but at least the beer was cold.
